What is it?
St. John’s
Wort is a shrubby perennial that bears yellow flowers in the early summer. Supplements are made from the dried flowers.
Why take it?
Numerous trials have concluded that St. John’s Wort is a safe effective treatment
for mild and moderate depression.
Scientists suspects that this ancient herbal remedy boosts serotonin
levels in the brain (serotonin is a chemical that helps regulate mood and
emotion. An analysis of 27 studies
conducted on more than 2,000 people found that herbal remedy better than a
placebo and as effective as some commonly prescribed antidepressant.
Investigators found that St. John’s Wort also helped alleviate
fatigue, sluggishness and disturbed sleep, and improved cognitive function.
Research also indicates that St. John’s Wort may provide antiviral
activity against HIV and the herpes simplex virus.
